Chapter 5

The next day was brutal, as expected, and by the time the week had ended and Saturday came around, I was more than ready for a break. In fact, I was pretty close to calling it quits. I was so tired of the drama. When Simms called me after midnight, however, I knew something was up.

We’d been texting back and forth throughout the week, quick missives to say hello or send something dirty which just left me hot and bothered. I was so ready to see him on Sunday, it wasn’t funny. Somehow, though, I didn’t think it was going to happen.

“Fitz, you’re going to hate me,” he began over the phone, and I could almost see him rubbing his head in frustration.

“Not possible. You have to work, don’t you?” I tried not to sigh, because I knew to expect this, but I’d been so looking forward to seeing him.

“Yup. And it’s grizzly. People are out for blood and they want results fast. I’m going to have to cancel our date, sweetness, but is it okay if I stop by sometime, even if it’s late, just to see you? Would that be okay?” Aww.

“Hell yeah. In fact, I’ll leave a spare key at the precinct so you can come by whenever you want. You need a place to crash that’s not an hour away in the middle of a volatile investigation.”

Silence. And then, “You would do that? You trust me that much? I mean, I know we haven’t known each other long, but—”

“You’re still an arrogant know-it-all, but yes, I do trust you, as short as it’s been. It’s actually refreshing to have someone be as up front and bold, if brash, as you are, though it’s sometimes hard to take. You’re not perfect, and neither am I, okay? And I want you to feel comfortable with whatever it is we have going on. Whatever you need, I’ll be here.”

“I could kiss you.”

“Save it for the next time you see me. Go on, I know you’re busy.”

“Thank you. I’ll look for that key. Bye for now.” And he was gone. I was disappointed, but I felt good about my decision to give him access to my place.

I dropped off the key at the precinct on my way home from grocery shopping the next day. Simms wasn’t there, but I kind of expected that. I didn’t have to work on Monday or Tuesday, having taken two personal days. I wasn’t sure what I would do with the time off. I’d had a vague plan of snuggling with Simms whenever possible, but with his schedule, who knew?

I ended up sleeping in on Monday, and by Tuesday afternoon, I was resigned to not hearing from Simms at all. I could understand why his previous partners had gotten upset about his schedule, but with my own work habits, and the irregular hours I’d kept caring for my dad, I knew what he was going through, and I could live with it.
